Munich...again

So for our last day in Munich Miri and I decided to take it easy and just see what we could see. I noticed the night before that across from where we were staying was a massive statue that looked important. It turned out to be the statue of Bavaria...some sort of statement of the glory and strength of Bavaria. Anyway we walked over and had a look. She is massive towering at over 27m.

We then went and found another couple of important buildings and stumbled upon some markets while searching out the English park. It's a huge and lovely park where we stopped and read our books for a while. And what do you do when you are a surfer but there is no surf near where you live. You surf in a man-made river that runs through a park. We stopped and ate our lunch while watching the surfers do their thing. Bizarre to see in the middle of a city.

Mmmmm cheese at the markets. Unfortunately no free samples.

This place sells the tasty treat of horse blood sausages (was sort of glad there were no free samples here)

Surfing in the city
At night we went to a restaurant with Kim and some of her workmates to a very traditional Bavarian restaurant. I had knodels which are like dumplings. Very delicious.
The next day we headed back to Berlin. our next destination is to the west where we will be staying near Dusseldorf and do a day trip to a nearby village in the Netherlands.

The hills are alive with the sound of music...

Salzburg.
One of my favourite places we've been to so far. It's small and quaint and hilly and beautiful and romantic and sound of music-y.

It only takes about 1.5 hours drive from Munich and we had a lovely day wondering around, finding where Mozart was born and lived, and also scenes from the movie The Sound of Music, explored a castle with amazing views of the city as well. We ate the best dessert I reckon I've ever had...apple strudel from a little hole in the wall organic bakery. Was just a lovely day and on the way home we blasted the soundtrack to the musical while we drove with a brilliant view of the Alps to our left. Brings a new meaning to the lyrics "Climb every mountain."

The river that runs through Salzburg

Me and Mozart hanging out

This cathedral was awe inspiring and there was even a guy playing the organ

I don't think this is from the movie but it looked like it so I took a picture. The graves were so artistic.

Me hanging out at the castle

Miri with the view of the city

Where Mozart was born (3rd floor I think)

Musicians playing interesting instruments. There was live music everywhere you went.

Apfelstrudel and coffee by the river

At the famous fountain the kids danced around. I'm holding an Austrian drink that is sort of like ginger beer but not really.

The abbey where Maria is from in the movie. Unfortunately it closed 2mins before we made it. I'll see it next time I stop by.

Munich

We've been a bit busy. This past week we traveled to Munich to visit one of Miri's close friends. We decided to break the drive up a bit and stay in a town called Wurtsburg on the way. We didn't have anyone to stay the night with there so called a friend who organised for us to stay with one of her friends. Nice guy but it is also very weird to stay at someone's house you have no connection with, and when you arrive find out you are also sleeping in the same room as him.

Anyway Miri and I had an interesting night's sleep after wondering around town (Photos to come as Miri has them on her phone...forgot to put the memory card back in the camera that night).

Early-ish next morning we made it to Munich where we found a parking spot, ate some lunch and then went wandering in the city. Munich is the most expensive city to live in in Germany. It is very beautiful with some amazing parks and spectacular buildings. We found a park and had a bit of a snooze and then caught up with Kim (Miri's friend). She is doing an internship there with IBM and is staying across the road from the grounds where Oktoberfest is held. It takes 3 months for them to build everything for the festival and it is pretty amazing to watch what they are producing.

This is not the car we drove in...I thought it would be hilarious to see any of the men in my family climb out of it though.

Was a fun evening.
